Founded by Mi-Jeong Lee in 1996, Ciné-Asie (now “Arts East-West”) was created to promote and produce the works of Korean, pan-Asian and Asian-identifying Canadian artists operating in the media arts community in Canada. A pillar of Arts East-West’s mission is enriching the visual landscape of contemporary Canadian art and fostering an inclusive, multicultural understanding of what it means to be an artist working within Canada and around the world. This is made possible in part by the organization’s annual film festival: Korean Film Festival Canada (KFFC). The 11th edition of KFFC 2024 starting from May 22nd to 31st is on the captivating new theme “Arts & Technologies: Sleep, Dream, Body” co-hosted with the Moving Image Research Lab’s Sociability of Sleep Project at McGill University. It will further explore the intersection of creative works and technological advancements through Asian cinema and media art, encompassing both present and future visual cultures.

Arts East-West will have an in-person networking event for the Asian Art Publication Lab’s (AAPlab) Asian Diaspora Book Collective (ADBC) on May 29th at 5:00 PM – 6:30 PM at Ada X. ADBC is an online book reading and discussion community, taking place every other Saturday on the subject of Asian diaspora and migration studies through the arts, which includes novels, poetry, essays, film, critical theory, painting, and roundtable talks with our members and guest speakers.

This community-based reading group is open to the general public and requires no membership fee.

After our ADBC networking event, we will have a workshop and ART-Talks with artist Ahreum Lee at Ada X on May 29th at 6:40 PM – 8:00 PM. Ahreum Lee will be presenting her media artworks Gui, the GhostBun Shin Sa BaMultiple Selves, and her early video works. The ART-Talks will be informal and open roundtable talks to discuss the Asian arts landscape with a focus group composed of artists and professionals, as well as the public (RSVP). ART-Talks offer an opportunity to foster dialogue on issues and perspectives concerning Asian Canadian arts, and artists of today and tomorrow.

Ada X artist in resident (spring 2023), Ahreum Lee is a musician and interdisciplinary media artist from Seoul, South Korea, currently based in Tiohtià:ke/Mooniyang/Montréal.
