C’est ici que poussent les fleurs (This is where the flowers grow) is an installation project that fuses visual art, poetry, story telling, music and sound art. With this work, derived from an artistic residency at ada x in spring 2024, the Torrents collective (Fiorella Boucher, An Laurence 安媛, Laura Criollo-Carrillo) explore the concepts of memory and heritage. A virtual version of the project created for the Allo Ada platform is accessible on-site with virtual reality headset.
“Considering that our identity surpasses the individual and is fashioned, among others, by political events which have impacted previous generations, as well as global power dynamics, our cultural and familial environments, we wonder what we would be, where we would be in other circumstances. Without colonisation, armed conflicts, socio-political upheavals in the country of our ancestors, what would our reality be? Through creation, we propose to make “real” memories coexist with speculative/invented memories in order to imagine possible versions of our memories. We materialize these visions through poetry, video, visuals, sound art, music and narrations. These converging memories were created from our desires, our family legacies, personal or public archival documents, or historical speculations. The process is similar to the notion of uchronia, exploring alternative histories.”
Through this creation, the Torrents collective explores the fragility and subjectivity of memory by traversing the various versions of themselves in space and time.
A series of workshops and guided tours will be held with the artists and mediators of Ada X in order to introduce the Rivière-des-Prairies community to digital art and mixed reality web XR.
This project is presented as part of the Allo Ada series by Ada X, produced in collaboration with the Maison de la Culture de Rivière-des-Prairies, and benefits from the financial support of the Ministère de la Culture et des Communications and the Ville de Montréal as part of the Entente sur le développement culturel de Montréal.
