“Comprised of recordings made throughout the past two years, Common Magic offers an impression of movement, of journeying desire. During endurance cycling trips, hikes and cross-country skiing within the Canadian landscape I take the camera and I bare myself to ache, but the surfaces always seem to hold. I submerse my body in rushing water and up against snow and these moments act as ritual, translated through the camera and voiced in projection, opening an ambiguous space between erotic allure, and loss. The assembled layering of imagery and sound presents a merging of moments, a visual blurring of experiences. They offer an entry to the hope of transcendence, but always remain in a physical state, expectant but not arriving.”
Sarah Barr’s work takes root in experiences of physical outdoor journeys and is then presented through video and sound. Born in 1985 in Trail, B.C., Barr currently works in Montreal where she is completing her MFA at Concordia University.
