This workshop offers a playful and creative approach to electronics design, exploring the freeform method. Requiring no printed circuit boards or pre-drawn designs, this technique encourages sculptural intuition rather than functional efficiency. Each component is soldered together; the structure is formed by the materials themselves and by any other elements (necessary or not for the circuit’s functioning) chosen by the participant. The addition of embellishments and ornaments is permitted and even strongly encouraged!

The workshop contains practical exercises, including breadboard prototyping, soldering techniques and freeform circuit making. Various projects based on the 555 integrated circuit are proposed to provide participants with concrete objectives, with electronic schematics already supplied and ready to be materialized. The circuits are simple, containing just a few components each to encourage the understanding of how they work, but more importantly, creativity in the form they take. The workshop culminates in a small final presentation/sharing and documentation of the works. Participants can take away their creations, which will run either on batteries or small solar panels.

Objectives

– to make artistic electronics more accessible;
– to promote a collective knowledge of electronics;
– to develop the ability to read electronic schematics;
– to understand how basic electronic components work;
– to develop skills through practical exercises, including breadboard prototyping and soldering techniques;
– to build freeform style electronic circuits.

Prerequisites

– Be an artist, creator or professional cultural worker
– Commit to being present at all stages of the workshop
