Femmes br@nchées #62: The BEMF [The Bernie’s Electronic Music Festival]

Participants

Studio XX, Montreal’s techno-feminist centre for experimentation, creation and critique, invites you to The BEMF [The Bernie’s Electronic Music Festival] happening Thursday March 30th, 2006.

The BEMF is an Edgy Women Festival satellite event made up of two parts – the Make It and The Shake It. The Make It takes the shape of a Salon Femmes br@nchées at Studio XX where three ladies who make electronic music share gear tips and production strategies. The Shake It part is a party where we get drunk and dance around.

Speaking at Studio XX will be JD Samson (of the group Le Tigre), dj Mini (resident at Club Parking’s Overdose night), and Anne-Françoise Jacques (member of experimental improv duo Minibloc). It will be moderated by Bernie Bankrupt, member of Canada’s premiere lesbian dance act, Lezzies On X. The event is free or pay-what-you-can.

The Shake It part happens at Playhouse on Parc Avenue. There will be a live set by minibloc and famous lesbian djs all night. They include JD Samson herself, Lynne T (LOE) and Leila P (AssPirate, lover of lesbians). That one is 8 dollars.

Detailed information and bios for the artists are down below.

jd samson is one third of the electronic feminist punk band and performance project, Le Tigre, who has toured internationally and who recently signed with Universal Records. JD is also one third of the friendship group, New England Roses, whose record ‘face time with son’ came out on Dogg Pony Records last year. JD was co-founder of Dykes Can Dance, an activist dance group who staged dance protests against the cabaret license law in NYC during Rudolph Giuliani’s reign. JD also made a calendar titled ‘jd’s lesbian calendar’ in 2003 which was a call out for butch lesbian visibility using her image forced on the wall for 365 days. JD has since followed with ‘jd’s lesbian utopia 2006’ which follows the journey of an rv trip across the USA through gay and lesbian rv parks searching for the lesbian utopia. jd has also been djing internationally in order to keep creating a space for queers, feminists and freaks to dance, smile and hold each other. http://www.letigreworld.com/

dj Mini has been a regular on the Montreal nightlife scene since 2000 when she started out at bar Blue Dog. After playing at many venues in and out of Montreal, she is now the resident dj and musical director for the Overdose night at Club Parking in Montreal. She has toured internationally and is now producing her own material. Her second album hits in Summer 2006 and will include all new songs inspired by such things as children’s toys. http://www.djmini.com/
