Residency from November 12th 2024 until January 31st 2025

Seeing Ghosts at Night is a multimedia video project that examines the intersection of colourism and technology. It builds on cinema’s legacy of bias, where lighting and film emulsions were designed for lighter skin tones—a bias that persists today, especially within AI. Facial recognition and face-swap apps often misinterpret or lighten dark skin tones, perpetuating erasure and systemic prejudice. This residency explores nighttime videography of dark-skinned individuals, along with projections that invite viewers to interact with and alter the visuals, thereby investigating embedded biases in AI and camera technology
