Launching our new season with Wired Women Salon# 98, Studio XX is proud to present ondist musician Geneviève Grenier, as part of Journée de la Culture 2013. Starting at 1pm, the artist will introduce us to les ondes Martenot, one of the first, and most responsive of electronic musical instruments, which she has been playing for more than 25 years. The public will have a chance to become familiar with the operation of the instrument, to learn about the history of this unique instrument and to listen to musical excerpts performed by the artist.

This event follows the Montreal premiere of the English version of the film about les ondes Martenot called The Wavemakers directed by Caroline Martel on Friday, Sept. 20 at Phi Centre and an ondes Martenot concert created especially for POP Montreal’s International Music Festival on Wednesday September 25.

Biography Geneviève Grenier

Geneviève Grenier studied the ondes Martenot at the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal where she obtained a First Prize in performance in 1990. In 1989 she was a prize winner in the Journées de la Musique Française competition.

Since 1988 she has appeared as soloist or ondiste invitée with a number of prominent groups. In the United States she has appeared with the Boston Modern Orchestra Project, San Francisco Opera, Brooklyn Philharmonic Orchestra, Yale Philharmonic, American Guild of Organists convention, and the Grand Teton Music Festival Orchestra. In Canada and abroad she has appeared with Sonic Lab, the Evergreen Club Gamelan, Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, Société de musique contemporaine du Québec, Nouvel Ensemble Moderne, l’Ensemble contemporain, McGill Symphony orchestra, and the Orchestra of the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal.

She has played the major works for ondes Martenot and orchestra, including Turangalîla Symphonie, les Trois petites liturgies de la présence divine et l’opéra St-Francis of Assise (Messiaen), Jeanne d’Arc au bucher (Honegger), le Concerto (Jolivet), le Concertino (Charpentier), Altitude (Champagne) and la la Symphonie # 3 (Pepin).

Most of the concerts in which Geneviève has appeared have been broadcast on CBC Radio. She has also made several recordings with many artists. In 1998 she recorded her first solo disc, Au Temps des Impressionnistes (The Time of the Impressionists), with works by Debussy, Ravel, Satie, Fauré and Gaubert. You can hear Geneviève Grenier in the music score for the film Aurore (Cusson) and on the last CD of The Puppini Sisters. She has just completed a new CD of works by Messiaen and Ravel with l’Ensemble d’ondes de Montréal.

Geneviève Grenier has been a member of the Ensemble d’ondes de Montréal since 1988. She is a founding member and current artistic director of la société de concert Vivarté in Montreal, and established the music school À la portée School of Musicin in 1989.
