Alice Ming Wai Jim

Alice Ming Wai Jim is an assistant professor of art history at Concordia University in Montreal. She has an MA in Art History from Concordia University (1996) and a PhD, Dean’s Honour List, from McGill University (2004), where she was a SSHRC and FCAR doctoral fellow. From 2001 to 2002, Jim was Research Fellow at the Centre of Asian Studies and the Centre for the Study of Globalization and Cultures at the University of Hong Kong. Her doctoral dissertation addressed urban metaphors in Hong Kong media art in relation to questions of place identity, history and spatial culture. Her MA thesis examined the 1989 “Black Wimmin: When and Where We Enter,” the first exhibition in Canada devoted entirely to the work of Black women artists. Jim’s teaching and research interests include contemporary art, contemporary Asian art, Asian Canadian art and social issues, media art and remix cultures, ethnic identity constructions and diasporic communities, themes of mobility and migration, world art histories and curatorial studies.Prior to her appointment at Concordia, Jim was Curator of the Vancouver International Centre for Contemporary Asian Art, Centre A (2003-2006). Exhibitions include: “Container Culture” for ISEA2006; “Yoko Ono: Mending Peace” (2006); “Neighbourhood”, a video exhibition and film screening of 13 Canadian artists (2005); with Viet Le, “Charlie Don’t Surf: 4 Vietnamese American Artists” (2005); and “Mutations<>Connections: Cultural (Ex)Changes in Asian Diasporas” (2004). In 2007, she curated the group exhibition “Redress Express: Chinese Restaurants and the Head Tax Issue in Canadian Art” for Centre A and convened the accompanying symposium on current directions in Asian Canadian art and culture at the Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Vancouver. Most recently, she organized the “Rearranging Desires: Curating the ‘Other’ Within” exhibition and symposium for Concordia’s Faculty of Fine Arts Gallery in 2008.
