The ffiles (fka XX Files) is an intersectional feminist media collective grounded in community radio. Through innovative programming, the collective produces work that explores our current technological landscape in the broadest sense. Their work reflects an interest in themes that center around but are not limited to transmission practices, sound healing, electronic music discourse, noise, techno-feminisms, the voice, and much more.

The collective hosts a weekly radio show on CKUT 90.3 FM every Wednesday at 11:30 AM EST, as well as a monthly show on Montreal’s N10.AS. They also program and present live audio-visual performances, artist talks, pirate radio installations and DJ sets.

The ffiles is committed to validating and disseminating the voices and work of artists who face systemic barriers as a result of their race, sexuality, gender, lifestyle, class, ability. Through their programming, the collective seeks to create space for marginalized artists within the local scene, while mindfully trying to resist processes of tokenization and commodification in their efforts to participate in and contribute to anti-oppressive community networks.

Started by Deborah VanSlet and Kathy Kennedy, The ffiles first aired in 1996. In 1997, Valérie d. Walker joined the show that she will fuel for over 16 years along with co-hosts Anita Cotic, Bérengère Marin-Dubuard. In 2010, she welcomed Britt Wray. In 2011, the co-hosts Maia Iotzova and Maya Richman, and in 2014, Stéphanie Dufresne, aka Fanie de la Fresne, Amanda-É. Clément and Nnedimma Nnebe, aka The Urban Dweller.

During the resulting exhibition, the artist noted difficulty of presenting work involving (audio) media in gallery; patrons discouraged in some way to “look through” work. She realized at that time that the internet was a better medium of presentation for such work. After receiving funding support for a work titled “On Probation” – her first web piece – she says she was “hooked”. Andrea learned Photoshop and html through a tutor, hired for the project, at this time. She does all design work, but often has collaborators or staff assisting with internet-based code. Interviewer (Valerie Walker) mentions Betty Page and Marylyn Monroe, and artist adds that also Jane Russell, come to mind in the presentation of the piece “Starring”. Artist states she has always had an enthusiasm of interest for Hollywood glamour and American pop-cultural references. Born and raised in Newfoundland to a Catholic family, TV presented a distinct awareness of “Other” – a world and people distinct from her own environment. American culture seemed more appealing, or to be “a better place”. Artist notes she was obsessed with the concept of Icon and beautiful ladies. Andrea confirms that characters in “Starring” were inspired by Monroe and Page, while other characters were the result of imagining what it is to be another person.

She notes that in Fort St. Johns, art making is generally more traditional. NewTel & NLAC collaborative arts grant supported the project (13 – 14, 000$) which made the process of generating awareness about the project possible, aside the project creation itself. This involved placing a billboard on a local commuter road, the Marylyn Monroe like imagery contrasted with harsh wintery landscape. The artist reflects upon her father’s reaction upon seeing her in an image at that scale. She also produced a 30sec TV commercial on NTV (local station) that ran during the news hour. Shot with digital video, exterior scenes and landscapes were shot first, interior chroma-key scenes of the artist performing were shot afterward, and composites of the two were created with After Effects. Andrea stars against herself, as both the Monroe and Page characters. They are presented as 50ft women in Fort St. Johns. Shot at 6am, while the environment seemed all the more desolate and isolated. Artist received emails from people whom were irritated with the advertisements, citing that they did not actually intend to sell products. Andrea was impressed with the varied reactions. She had hoped to break through the barriers she views as existing between the local general public and artwork presentation. She refers to the ads, as well as postcards, as “fake advertising mini art pieces” intended to “lure” public to her website. She notes that the postcards were well-distributed / received. She received emails from visitors to the site that lived abroad, whom had been mailed these postcards, and sees them on fridges or in car interiors.

Interviewer states that StudioXX is a women’s collective: asks if there are collectives like this in St. Johns. Andrea answers there is no formal collective like this, but that there are many fabulous women artists whom participate in a strong community. Informal gatherings take place in artist’s homes. The artist notes that she misses the absence of new media centre in St. Johns, but that there is an independent filmmaking cooperative where they have access to equipment.
